Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments are a safe and reliable way to treat skin concerns such as redness, uneven tone and texture, and pigmentation issues with no downtime. To achieve the best results, work with a doctor who has extensive experience with IPL treatments in New York.

What does IPL treat?

IPL can treat several specific skin concerns and provide overall facial rejuvenation by improving skin tone and texture. Concerns most frequently treated with IPL include:

During your consultation at Gendler Dermatology, upper east side office, we will help determine how IPL can help you.

How IPL works

IPL involves the use of a special device that sends pulses of light through the skin’s surface. The wavelength of light varies slightly according to the treatment area. With redness or rosacea, the light energy targets red blood vessels beneath the skin to break down damaged tissue and tiny vessels.

When used to treat uneven pigmentation, the light breaks apart the areas of darker pigmentation into tiny fragments that the body can absorb. IPL can also cause a diffuse “trauma” just under the skin’s surface, which stimulates a natural healing response within the body and results in fresher, clearer skin.

The ideal candidate for IPL

IPL is an appropriate treatment for those who want to improve their skin’s appearance or treat dermatological issues such as rosacea. To ensure the treatment will benefit you and not cause any side effects, Dr. Gendler will carefully assess your skin and review your medical history before recommending IPL treatment.

What to expect during your treatment

Dr. Gendler will meet with you before your procedure to do a skin exam. During this time, she will consult with you on the treatment options available and work together to create an individualized treatment plan. Treatments are generally coupled with at-home products designed to enhance results.

IPL in New York is quick, with sessions lasting as little as 20 minutes depending on the condition and the area being treated. Typically, you can expect to need anywhere between four and six sessions to achieve your desired results.

FAQ

Improvement in the skin is generally seen after each treatment. That being said, you can expect optimal results after approximately 4 sessions depending on the condition of your skin. Some patients may need more than 4 sessions to achieve their desired outcome. Each session will be one month apart to give the skin enough time to return to its normal state before your next treatment.

IPL treatments in NYC require no downtime. In fact, you can go back to your usual daily activities straight away. You may experience slight discomfort depending on your pain threshold so we recommend you book your treatment on a day with no other commitments.

While results last a long time, our skin is constantly changing and exposed to external pollutants, chemicals, and the sun every day. As a result, it is recommended you get a “touch up” session once a year during the winter months to maintain results.

The risks associated with IPL treatments are extremely rare. However, some side effects may include redness, pigmentation changes, and in extreme and unlikely cases, scarring. Dr. Gendler has extensive experience treating patients with laser devices such as Lumenis’ M22 and will ensure that all safety protocols are followed to minimize any risks or side effects.
