Every day, your skin works hard to protect you from the world — sunlight, pollution, and environmental stress can all damage your skin’s DNA, the “instruction manual” that keeps your cells healthy. Over time, that damage builds up and can lead to fine lines, dark spots, and even skin cancer. Unfortunately, human skin is deficient in some of the enzymes that work so well to do this in plants and bacteria (and the reason why plants and bacteria don’t “photoage”).
This is where topically applied DNA repair enzymes come in. Think of them as your skin’s personal repair team — they help fix the small bits of DNA damage that occur from daily exposure to the environment. Our bodies naturally produce these enzymes in small quantities, , but as we age, their activity slows down.
When used in skincare products, DNA repair enzymes can help restore the skin’s natural ability to heal itself. Regular use — especially along with a broad-spectrum sunscreen — can improve tone and texture, minimize visible signs of aging, and support overall skin health.
DNA Repair Enzymes come as 3 different types: Plankton extract (from algae) which is activated by visible light, so should be used during the day, Micrococcus Luteus extract (from bacteria, can be used day and night), and Arabidopsis Thaliana (from the mustard plant, can be used day and night). Note: There could be a rare interaction with Arabidopsis in someone allergic to mustard, so keep that in mind.
The beauty of these DNA Repair Enzymes is that there are no adverse events—no irritation, peeling, sunburn, or redness—associated with their use. And they can be used safely by anyone!
At Gendler Dermatology, we believe the best skincare works with your skin’s biology, not against it. DNA repair technology is one of the most exciting innovations in modern dermatology, helping skin stay resilient, radiant, and healthy from the inside out.
While there are quite a few products on the market with these enzymes, I wanted to create a product that had a silky, light feel—a true serum- one that could be used easily on all skin types and all ages. In fact, it can actually be added to your own favorite moisturizer to minimize adding yet another layer to your routine. This is why I have developed Dr. Gendler’s SmartDRops, and I know you are going to love them as much as I do. In fact, I bet these will become your favorite skincare product, too!
Ask us which DNA repair products might be right for your skin — we’ll help you choose what truly makes a difference.
We offer several products containing these enzymes.
